Leadership Exchange Programme Shortlisted for for 2016 Scottish Public Service Award

Scotland’s only cross sectoral Leadership Exchange Programme has been recognised by The 2016 Scottish Public Service Awards. Shortlisted in the category of Employee Development and Skills, the awards, supported by the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament, aim to celebrate outstanding achievements within Scotland's civic landscape and give recognition to the work that goes on - sometimes behind the scenes and often in difficult circumstances - to support the governance of Scotland.

This cross-sector peer learning leadership development initiative, provides a flexible framework for leaders at middle, senior and executive levels to learn from each other, develop their understanding of another sector, their own leadership skills and their ability to work collaboratively.

The Programme pairs leaders in brief cross-sector exchanges, where participants take turns to work alongside each other in their respective organisations. The aim of the exchanges being to increase leaders’ understanding of each other’s sectors, cultures and environment, and thus improve their own leadership skills and their abilities to work collaboratively.

To date 238 participants have been matched, and 56 new applications have been received in the last 12 months.  Incredibly positive outcomes have resulted from these exchanges and it has proven to be instrumental in building leadership capacity across Scotland’s public services in its four years since inception.

Feedback from past participants has included:

Louise McDonald, Chief Executive of Young Scot, and IOD Third Sector Director of the Year, remarked: “You’re not going to get many opportunities like this one, so I would take it right now.”

Chief Executive of COPE Scotland, Hilda Campbell said: “The Exchange was really useful and I am pleased to say now having built this connection I intend to continue it. I would highly recommend this programme.”

Geoff Leask, Chief Executive, Young Enterprise Scotland has said of his exchange: “The Leadership Exchange Programme has been a refreshing way for me to take time from the day to day of my organisation’s operations to reflect, share and learn from a leader from a different sector – outcomes on both sides have been very positive.”

The programme is a work-stream of the Scottish Leaders Forum initiative Workforce Scotland and is led by the Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO). From 2017 Leadership Exchange is moving to a cohort approach. The next application submission deadline 28th February 2017.
