Governance and user run organisations
Introduction:
Campaigners for human rights and equalities have had a profound impact on social policy and as a consequence, on the nature of welfare provision. As a result user-empowerment has come to include user-centred and user-led provision. These changes in ideology and provision have given users of services greater ownership of an organisation’s services but also added to the complexity of governance in charities.
With as many as 75-100% of the trustees of a charity, in some sense ‘users’, the duty of trustees to ensure they act in the interests of the charity, as opposed to their own interest (e.g. receiving a service from their organisation), is not straightforward – for user trustees, charities or for the regulators.
