Description

Governance and user run organisations

Introduction:

Campaigners for human rights and equalities have had a profound impact on social policy and as a consequence, on the nature of welfare provision. As a result user-empowerment has come to include user-centred and user-led provision. These changes in ideology and provision have given users of services greater ownership of an organisation’s services but also added to the complexity of governance in charities.

With as many as 75-100% of the trustees of a charity, in some sense ‘users’, the duty of trustees to ensure they act in the interests of the charity, as opposed to their own interest (e.g. receiving a service from their organisation), is not straightforward – for user trustees, charities or for the regulators.

The event will be of benefit to:

  • Chief officers and senior managers working in user centred or user led organisations

This event will explore

  1. the strengths and issues for governance of user trusteeship
  2. best practice in the governance of charities of user- centred and user-run organisations and
  3. the impact on the governance of charities of the drive to ensure user choice through the marketplace – at a time of funding reducations to public services.

By the end of the event you will have:

  • Talked about the advantages, issues, principles and current practice
  • Heard about and discussed approaches to common predicaments
  • Reflected on the implications for user-led services of commitments to consumer choice and the market-based ideology shaping welfare.

This event will be run by Shirley Otto an expert in Governance and Leadership
